Have you ever come home one day and met your dog drinking toilet water with urine, poop & cleaner? Has your child ever visited the toilet to pee, and after peeing, your dog rushed inside and drank that same toilet water with urine inside? Has the same thing ever happened with poop too?
Someone said something to me one day about dogs that got me thinking. He said that dogs are scavengers. They are that kind of animal or pet that naturally searches for food and water. He went ahead to say that the ancestors of dogs were equally scavengers; that’s why even the modern dogs we have nowadays still possessed that quality.
However, the question is, since dogs are considered to be scavengers, should you allow them to drink toilet water with urine, poop, and toilet cleaner inside? Should you not worry anytime you heard a chugging sound from your toilet and it appears that your dog is drinking toilet water again?
In comparison, toilet or bathroom water is that fresh, clean water inside your toilet after you must have flushed the toilet, while the other toilet water has urine, poop, and even toilet cleaner. Both are not the same thing. I recommend you read that post I made because it will help you to understand what I’m saying fully.
Be that as it may, the fact that you are reading this post means you are looking to find a quality honest opinion about your dog drinking toilet water with urine, poop & cleaner. Like I did in the previous post, I will try as much as I can to do justice to this topic. I will start with, is it safe for dogs to drink toilet water with urine, poop, and toilet cleaner?
Is Toilet Water with Urine and Poop Safe for Dogs?
The answer can be yes and no. It is safe for dogs to drink toilet water with poop, urine, but it’s not safe for dogs to drink toilet water with toilet cleaner. I will try to explain this in a better way; it will be easier to understand. I will start by arranging them into a single topic.
Dog Drinking Toilet Water with Urine
It is safe for dogs to drink toilet water with urine only if you know that your system is clean. It is not safe to let your dog drink toilet water with urine when it’s obvious that the person who peed is taking some substance. The substance here can be medication; it can as well be something else.
Drugs can appear on your urine; that is why sometimes when you visit the hospital to do one taste or the other, they will ask you to pee. In sports, they make use of urine to test if a player is using drugs or not. That is to show you how vital urine is and how whatever substance we take appears there.
Have you noticed that sometimes, when you take drugs, the smell of your urine will change? Most of the substances we take were strictly made for humans; it may be bad for your dog when he drinks toilet water with such urine inside. Therefore, to be on the safer side, do not allow your dog to drink from your toilet water, whether there is urine on it or not.
Dog Drinking Toilet Water with Poop
The answer to this question is tough. Do you know that dogs eat poop? Maybe your dog has never eaten poop before because you’ve never given him such food to eat, but the truth is dogs eat poop.
The question now is, should you allow your dog to drink toilet water with poop since dogs eat poop?
Let me tell you this short conversation I had with my Nigerian friend back then in school who saw me one-day taking care of my dog. He told me how most dogs in Nigeria are raised. According to him, Nigerian dogs mostly eat poops. Some households get dogs always to eat their child poop anytime the child poops outside.
He was amazed at how I take care of my dog. I remembered him asking how much I’ve spent on my dog. He was amazed. He said in Nigeria; nobody has the time to buy dog food for their dog. Some even have five dogs, and they let all of them wander about searching for food themselves. That is to tell you that dogs eat poops, so it may not be dangerous for their health.
However, if your dog has never eaten poop before if he has been eating good dog food, do not allow him to drink toilet water with poop. While it may not be dangerous for the dog, letting him do that, you are exposing him to something he has not eaten before, and its a matter of time, he will start looking for toilet water with poop. So, the earlier, the better.
Dog Drinking Toilet Water with Cleaner
Toilet water with bathroom or toilet cleaner inside is terrible for a dog’s health. It is very toxic to dogs. It would be best if you never allowed your dog to form the habit of drinking toilet water with cleaner. You know how toxic some chemicals can be, especially bleach.
The smell of bleach alone is very irritating for human beings talkless of dogs. So, don’t allow your dog to do such. If your dog has done that before, please take precautions and never let it happen again.
Why do Dog Drink Toilet Water?
Do you know that there are many reasons why dogs drink toilet water? The way you are attracted to a chilled drink is how dogs are attracted to toilet water.
Whenever you visit the toilet, either to poop or to urinate, you tend to flush the toilet afterward. After you flushed down the poop or urine, the toilet is replaced with clean water. Dogs find the water clean and cold, unlike the water you left on a plastic or metal plate.
Moreover, dogs like running water. Have you ever been washing your car, while doing that, you realized that your dog is drinking from your water hose? Dogs like running water because they see it as fresh and clean, unlike the one you always keep for them.
How to Stop Dog from Drinking Toilet Water with Urine & Poop
When you keep water for a dog for so long, the water will be hot. Even dogs know that the water has been there for a very long time. In that case, they will choose to drink from your toilet if they have the opportunity. That’s why I urge you to make sure your toilet door is closed all the time. If you have a kid and can’t lock the door, ensure that the toilet water is clean and fresh.
Nonetheless, there are many reasons why you should not let your dog drink your toilet water with either urine, poop, or toilet cleaner on it. One of the reasons is that you kiss your dog, your dog kisses you as well.
However, the probability of your child/children kissing your dog is very high, as well as your dog kissing them. Trust me; you don’t want your dog kissing everybody in the house with the same mouth with which he drank toilet water with urine, poop, and toilet cleaner?
Meanwhile, if you want to stop your dog from drinking toilet water with urine, poop, and toilet cleaner, try and apply a preventive measure. Is either you always close your toilet door, or you buy a water fountain.
This type of water fountain may help limit your dog(s) from drinking out of the toilet water. The water is large enough for two dogs to drink at the same time and it is easy to maintain.
Other preventive measures include;
- Changing their water always to fresh cold water
- Using different water bowl to see which one your dog prefer
It is not a good idea to let your dog drink out of your toilet with urine, poop, or toilet cleaner. It’s better to do the right thing and be on the safer side. Get your dog a water fountain and save him from getting himself into trouble with such toilet water.
